The above is a poem by William Butler Yeats titled ‘The Second Coming’ and adopted by Prof. Chinua Achebe in the opener to his classic novel, ‘Things Fall Apart.’
And truly, the centre cannot hold anymore for Chinua Achebe – one of the world’s most celebrated writers and best seller who passed away last night in a hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Professor Achebe had been sick for a while and was even rumoured dead some few weeks ago, but this time, it is not a rumour.
He was 82, having been born on November 16, 1930, and had been in hospital in recent days.
Achebe is best known for his classical novel Things fall Apart. His last book, There Was A Country: A Personal History of Biafra, is still making waves.
Until his death, Prof Achebe was the David and Marianna Fisher University Professor and Professor of Africana Studies at Brown.
