The Delta State Deputy President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Alex Okwudi, and five others are currently cooling their heels in police net following their alleged involvement in the murder of the secretary of a PDP ward and a councillorship aspirant, Tony Osubor, in Issele Uku, the administrative headquarters of Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.
Investigations by Delta Herald revealed that the late Osubor was murdered in cold blood on Saturday, May 17 at a nearby bush, a few metres away from Chambers Guest House and the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
It was learnt that a minor fracas between the late Osubor and his assailants ensued at the guest house where Osubor came with a lady whose name could not be identified as at press time.
The fracas took a dangerous dimension leading to Osubor running into the bush with Mr. Okwudi and his co-murderers trailing him into the bush where he ran to take cover and stabbed him on the throat with a jack knife where he bled to death.
Delta Herald further learnt that the deceased Osubor was left in the bush until the following day, Sunday May 18, before he was discovered and the decomposing body was brought out from the bush.
A source who narrated the incident to Delta Herald at the weekend, said three of Osubor’s assailants trailed him to the bush between the INEC office and the Chambers Guest House, stabbed him and forgot him to rot away in the bush.
The prime suspect in the murder, according to findings is Okwudi, who was once the Aniocha North Local Government Chairman of NULGE before his election to the office of the state Deputy President of NULGE.
Others who are accomplices in the dastard act are Collins Ogugua, an indigene of Onicha Ugbo; Ike Akeh, who was alleged to have slit his throat with the knife, is from Issele Uku; Asia Iwedike, an indigene of Issele Uku; Peter Nwafe, from Onicha Ugbo; Eva Nwabuonwo, from Onicha Olona and a female accomplice, all from Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.
The proprietor of the guest house where the fracas emanated, IK Uwagwu, who is reported to be interested in contesting chairmanship of the local government, was also been arrested but has been released by the police pending further investigations.
It was further learnt that members of Olona community were enraged with the involvement of Eva Nwabuonwo in the incident and were at the verge of razing down his mother’s house while the search for him lasted.
Confirming the incident, Delta State Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, Celestina Kalu, said the principal suspects confessed to have committed the crime.
Kalu, who said the case was still under investigation by the Investigating Police Officer, told Delta Herald that the investigation was making headway.
As at the time of filing this report, Kalu said she was yet to get full details from the investigating officer, the result of which would lead to the next line of action.
A call put forward to Uwagwu, the owner of the guest house who has been released to get his comments, was not picked.
