The Night Rider is Back
The two stars of the hit TV show Knight Rider have been reunited after a 26 year absence – in Manchester of all places.
David Hasselhoff – AKA Michael Knight – was pictured driving KITT as he prepares for the role of Captain Hook in the panto Peter Pan at the Opera House in Manchester. And what better way to drum up publicity than to wheel out the car that made him famous?
KITT was Hoff’s crime-fighting, artificially intelligent Pontiac Trans Am from the hit TV series Knight Rider that ran from 1982 to 1986. In the show, Knight and KITT proved to be a formidable crime-fighting duo, with the sultry-voiced car saving his bacon every episode.
. Unfortunately, the Hoffmeister can’t beat the law in Manchester: KITT has received a parking ticket and no clever-talking, self-driving, armed car can get out of that.
KITT’s most famous attribute was a red bank of red LED lights on the front bumper that enabled the car to ‘see’. KITT was more than just a computer, though, with a personality and the ability to interact with humans. Say the wrong thing, and KITT would sulk.
KITT makes James Bond’s cars look like a Reliant Robin. It could sneak silently up on criminals thanks to a stealth mode, had a ‘super pursuit’ mode that enabled top speeds of more than 300mph (450+ kph!) and included such weaponry as a flame thrower and tear gas launcher.
