Mavin- A Modern Family
They say to get to where you want to be, you need to know where you’re coming from. Don Jazzy is coming from a past, spanning seven years, as one half of arguably the most dynamic duo on this side of the Atlantic. The other half of this equation, of course, is the mercurial Koko Master, D’banj. The pair came up together fronting the aptly named Mo’ Hits Records but have since gone their separate ways in a parting of Red Sea proportions earlier this year.
While news of the split shocked dedicated fans and casual observers alike, the great debaters and speculators went to work as to what could possibly have caused the rift between the seemingly inseparable producer and entertainer duo. Unpleasant email exchanges, allegedly between D’banj and Don Jazzy, supposedly ‘leaked’ unto the internet and eventually, D’banj granted an exclusive interview to Nigerian Entertainment Today, giving a detailed account of his side of the story. Not long afterwards came Don Jazzy’s out-of-the-blue announcement of his new outfit, Mavin Records.
The Mavin era was officially ushered in with the release of the compilation album, Solar Plexus, which revealed that Mo’ Hits old boys, Wande Coal, Dr. SID and D’Prince had stuck
by the man they fondly call Don Baba J, but in yet another twist from the talented beat smith, it was announced that the talented Ms. Tiwa Savage had joined Mavin Records as the official “first lady.” The album served as a bold statement that Jazzy and his team were ready to move on and put the D’banj era behind them. However, sometimes, it helps to talk about these things and that’s exactly what we did with the Mavin All-Stars when we caught up with them at Wan Tan restaurant on Victoria Island.
